Austrian Airlines carried 1,146,500 passengers in August 2011. Therewith, Austrian Airlines has had a passenger increase of 1.7 percent in comparison to August last year. This is the strongest August in terms of carried passengers ever since. The average passenger load factor, at 79.7 percent, was 3.5 percentage points below the figure for the same month last year. The capacity measured in available seat kilometres (ASK) rose by 4.8 percent. The figure for revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) rose by 0.3 percent.
In the period from January to August 2011, the number of passengers carried rose by 2 percent compared to previous year’s figure: 7.4 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines. The load factor fell by 3.1 percentage points to 73.6 percent. The capacity measured in available seat kilometres (ASK) rose by 4.4 percent. The figure for revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) rose by 0.3 percent.
The Members of the Austrian Airlines Executive Board, Peter Malanik and Andreas Bierwirth said the following: “The results of our European flights are showing us that our active market strategy is paying off. Anyhow, this year remains difficult: The yields are under pressure.“
Europe
In August 2011, around 876,000 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines within Europe. This is 5.2 percent more passengers than last year. The load factor fell by 0.8 percentage points to 77.3 percent. Austrian Airlines increased the ASK by 6.5 percent, the RPK rose by 5.4 percent.
In the period from January to August 2011, more than 5.8 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines within Europe. This is 3.8 percent more than last year. The load factor rose by 0.5 percentage points to 71.1 percent. The figure for ASK rose by 3.6 percent, and the one for RPK by 4.4 percent.
Intercontinental
In August 2011, the number of passengers carried on intercontinental flights fell by 6 percent to 156,200. The crisis in the Middle East – for example the situation in Libya and Syria – has clearly an affect here. In addition, Ramadan with its traditionally low demand for air travel fully fell into August. The load factor, which is 80.6 percent, was 5.6 percentage points below the figure of the previous year. Austrian Airlines increased its ASK by 6 percent. The figure for RPK fell by 0.9 percent.
Austrian Airlines carried 1,105 million passengers in the period from January to August 2011, or 1.5 percent less than last year. The load factor fell by 6.4 percentage points to 75.3 percent. The crisis in Japan and the Middle East are having an effect also here. Austrian Airlines increased its ASK by 8.7 percent. The figure for RPK rose by 0.2 percent.
?Charter
As a result of the capacity restriction set by the EU, Austrian Airlines reduced its ASK in the charter business segment.
In August 2011, passenger volume stood at 114,300, which is 10.7 percent less than the previous year. The load factor fell by 4.1 percentage points to 86.4 percent. Austrian Airlines reduced the ASK by 7.7 percent. The figure for RPK fell by 11.9 percent.
In the period from January to August 2011, Austrian Airlines carried 484.600 passengers in the Charter segment. This figure is 10.5 percent lower than last year. The load factor fell by 2.4 percentage points to 77.4 percent. The figure for ASK fell by 16.3 percent, while the one for RPK fell by 18.8 percent.
