Austrian Airlines Traffic Result for January 2011: 2.1 Percent Increase in Passenger Volume

Austrian Airlines carried 690.600 passengers in January 2011. This is by 2,1 percent more than in January 2010. The passenger load factor declined by 1.9 percentage points to hit 67.5 percent.

The members of the Austrian Airlines Executive Board Peter Malanik und Andreas Bierwirth said: “We continued to grow in January 2011. But the market environment remains difficult. Also, the EU capacity restrictions still apply. We have to fly with the handbrake on“.

Europe
In January, around 541,800 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines within Europe. This is the equivalent of an increase of 3.2 percent compared to the same month the previous year. The load factor rose to 61.5 percent, an increase of ?2.4 percentage points. Austrian Airlines reduced capacity measured in available seat kilometres (ASK) by 1.3 percent, and increased revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) by 2.7 percent.

Intercontinental
In January, 122,600 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines in the intercontinental segment. This is the equivalent of an increase of 6.4 percent compared to the same month the previous year. The load factor fell by 6.4 percentage points to 72 percent. Austrian Airlines increased ASK by 13.1 percent. RPK rose by 4 percent.

Charter
As a result of the capacity restriction set by the EU, Austrian Airlines had to reduce its ASK in the charter business segment. In January, the passenger figure fell by 27.4 percent to 26,100. The load factor fell by 1.8 percentage points to 70.7 percent. Austrian Airlines reduced the ASK by 45.6 percent. RPK fell by 46.9 percent.
