The Board and Management of the new Eastern Air Lines will welcome the first aircraft in Eastern’s fleet, a Boeing 737-800 being flown into Miami International Airport for the first time. Eastern has ordered twenty Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It will be the backbone of Eastern’s fleet of new fuel efficient WhisperLiners to take to the skies starting in the second quarter of 2015.
The inaugural arrival will receive a water cannon salute, the aircraft will be dedicated to “The Spirit of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker”, Eastern’s most famous CEO from 1930 to 1965 (and after whom the Rickenbacker Causeway is named). Speeches by Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Emilio T. Gonzalez, Edward Wegel, and others to welcome the aircraft and the re-launch of Eastern Air Lines in Miami. The first Eastern Air Lines operated from 1927 until 1991 and was once the largest employer in Miami-Dade County, and the largest airline serving Latin America.
