Lufthansa is hiring around 4,000 new staff in Germany in 2011. The need for additional staffing is particularly acute in operational areas: Germany’s biggest airline is seeking 2,200 flight attendants alone at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. In addition, around 900 new service agents are being taken on to support passengers on the ground. A further 270 trainees are „ready for take-off“ and commence their training courses to become airline pilots. Openings are also on offer in other areas: The Lufthansa Group is making positions available for more than 300 new apprentices in preparation for careers in aviation. Job opportunities are also on offer for qualified specialists, university graduates and students in dual university courses, combining theory and on-the-job experience.
“Lufthansa is on a growth path. Alone at our bases in Germany, we are recruiting 4,000 new people. Simultaneously, we are continuing to focus on reducing unit costs. Expansion of seating capacities through the deployment of larger regional aircraft or the A380 on intercontinental routes is increasing the need for extra staff in the cockpit and in the cabin. We also require more staff on the ground to accommodate rising passenger numbers. An eloquent example of the function of air traffic as a job engine,“ observed Lufthansa Chairman and CEO Christoph Franz.
Lufthansa ranks among Germany’s most attractive employers and the airline is a permanent fixture upfront in employer ratings. Its status is substantiated by job applications: Last year, around 115,000 applications for employment at the Lufthansa Group were submitted through the online career portal www.be-lufthansa.com. Apprenticeships in 38 different professions and dual courses for university students are available to applicants. Lufthansa additionally runs dedicated courses for “Service Professionals“ training for jobs as flight attendants or passenger support personnel at airports. A large proportion of applicants, both female and male, opt for pilot training in preparation for their “dream job“ in the cockpit of the airline’s jets. Trainee programmes at the Group are available for graduates in all disciplines seeking direct entry into the aviation industry.
Staff at the Lufthansa Group have every opportunity of constantly improving their qualifications: At their disposal is a broad array of further education courses as well as the airline’s unique educational institute – the Lufthansa Training & Conference Center in Seeheim. Attractive working-time models allow staff to combine their professional with their private life. The Lufthansa Group was again the recipient of a number of awards in 2010 in recognition of its policy on demographic change and diversity among the workforce. The Lufthansa Group currently employs around 117,000 people from 150 nations, among them 65,000 staff in Germany.
Alongside the classical recruitment channels, Lufthansa is making intensive use of the new media. The career fanpage “Be Lufthansa“ on facebook is already among the biggest and most popular of its type in Germany. Prospective applicants can log in to peruse the job opportunities at Lufthansa and check what’s on offer in the way of vacancies and traineeships. Applications must be submitted online through the www.be-Lufthansa.com career portal, where information on vacancies and the required qualifications is available for download.
