Spanair invests further in the German market with 2 new routes to Hamburg & Berlin

Barcelona – Spanair has begun operating two new routes between Barcelona and Germany – one of the airline’s key priorities and a market with great growth potential – as part of its route development and expansion strategy. Today, Monday 4th April, sees the starts of its flights to Hamburg, whilst the inaugural flight to Berlin, the German capital, will be taking place tomorrow.

Spanair will be operating three flights a week to Hamburg (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). The morning departure time will make for easy connections with the airline’s domestic destinations. Hamburg is one of Germany’s key economic hubs and the site of one of Europe’s largest ports. Spanair estimates passenger numbers of more than 23,000 during this first year of operations on this route. Tickets are on sale from 70 euros, including taxes. Tuesday 5th will see the start of the new Berlin route with four flights a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays), also departing in the morning for easy connections with other Spanair domestic flights. Potential passenger numbers for this new route stand at more than 33,000 a year. Both routes will be operated with modern Airbus 320s from the Spanair fleet. Fares to Berlin start at 56 euros, including taxes.

Occupancy levels are already ahead of those estimated indicating high demand for the services and Spanair’s products offering as a full service carrier.

Furthermore, at the end of March, Spanair began operating a second daily flight between Barcelona and Munich. This is a night flight, enabling our passengers to reach Barcelona early the following morning, a perfect schedule for business travellers, as it allows for a same-day return.

Once in Munich, our passengers can connect with flights codeshared with Lufthansa – also a member of Star Alliance – to intercontinental flights to destinations such as Hong Kong.

With these two new destinations, Spanair now operates four routes to Germany: three from Barcelona (Munich, Hamburg and Berlin) and one from Madrid (Frankfurt), totalling 70 flights a week. This makes Germany the country with the highest number of international destinations operated by our airline. In 2010, Spanair carried almost 300,000 passengers between Spain and Germany. That number is set to rise to more than 375,000 in 2011. The Hamburg and Berlin flights and the second flight to Munich are operated under a code share agreement with our partner Lufthansa.

Thanks to our alliance with Lufthansa, there are also a further 84 flights operating out of Barcelona to Frankfurt, 28 to Düsseldorf and 70 to Munich.
