TAM Airlines improves operational efficiency with IT from Lufthansa Systems

TAM Airlines opts for Lufthansa Systems’ Lido/Flight to benefit from more efficient flight planning processes and cost savings. Latin America’s largest airline recently signed a ten-year contract to this effect. Lido/Flight calculates optimal flight routes based on various factors and can reduce fuel costs by up to five percent. Lufthansa Systems will operate the system in its data center as an Application Service Providing (ASP) model.

“Our growth plans demand a powerful flight planning system which considerably increases the efficiency and operational flexibility of our daily operations. We selected Lido/Flight because of its high degree of automation and strong route optimization capabilities. This enables us to reduce fuel consumption and costs”, explains Aroldo Shoji, Manager of Flight Operations Engineering department at TAM Airlines.

With its modern technology and user-friendly architecture, Lido/Flight covers all aspects of flight planning. The system provides dispatchers with many optimization options regarding flight time, fuel consumption or costs of each flight. The system also offers additional modules which facilitate dispatchers’ work in various subtasks. It is in use with major airlines around the world operating in different business models. Lido/Flight is also a component of the Integrated Operations Control (IOCC) Platform from Lufthansa Systems.

“We are very proud that TAM Airlines selected Lido/Flight to optimize its flight planning. This new customer is an important achievement for Lufthansa Systems and strengthens our position in the emerging Latin America market. Our portfolio offers a wide range of IT solutions that meet the operational needs of airlines in this region,” says Klaus Bernhardt, Senior Vice President Regional Management Americas at Lufthansa Systems.

Based in São Paulo, TAM Airlines provides scheduled air transportation in domestic and international markets. With a fleet of 153 aircraft the major Brazilian carrier operates approximately 900 flights per day. In 2010, TAM Airlines transported 34.5 million paying passengers, a 13.6% increase on the previous year.
