THE GOVERNMENTS OF CANADA AND NOVA SCOTIA ANNOUNCE NEW INVESTMENTS IN TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE

HALIFAX — The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, and the Honourable Darrell Dexter, Premier of Nova Scotia, today announced new infrastructure investments in Nova Scotia. The total government investment to extend the Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s main runway is $14 million. This new investment will facilitate the growth of air cargo traffic, increasing economic growth potential for Nova Scotia and the region.

“Investments in Nova Scotia’s transportation infrastructure are investments toward growing the economic potential of our province,” said Minister MacKay. “Our government is proud to support Nova Scotians and Nova Scotia businesses with this important investment.”

“Enhancing Halifax Stanfield International Airport is an important part of our plan to grow the province’s economy and create good jobs for Nova Scotians,” said Premier Dexter. “By making this important transportation hub more attractive to passenger and cargo traffic, we are helping businesses be more competitive internationally.”

The runway extension from 8,800 to 10,500 feet will allow the airport to handle larger wide-bodied and heavy aircraft. This will enhance the airport’s position as a key international air cargo hub.

Federal support for these projects is conditional on meeting all applicable federal eligibility and approval requirements.
