ˇ August 2013: capacity utilization increases to 86.1 percent
The Austrian Airlines Group carried more than 1.1 million passengers in August 2013, corresponding to a rise of 1.9 percent. The offering as measured by available seat kilometers (ASK) was up by 1.7 percent due to the newly introduced flights to Chicago. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) were up by 2.5 percent. Capacity utilization (passenger load factor) in August 2013 improved by 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous year, increasing to 86.1 percent. “We once again carried more passengers in the holiday month of August. Capacity utilization on routes to the USA and European holiday destinations reached peak values. Austrian Airlines has made great progress with respect to productivity and profitability”, says Karsten Benz, Chief Commercial Officer of Austrian Airlines.
The total number of passengers carried by the Austrian Airlines Group in the period January-August 2013 declined by 1.9 percent from the prior-year level to approximately 7.5 million. This is due to the intentional 5.1 percent reduction in capacity. Within the context of a fleet harmonization program, the domestic airline streamlined its fleet by four medium-haul aircraft. In addition, up to two long-haul aircraft were taken out of service in the period January to August 2013 to equip them with the new cabin. Capacity utilization (passenger load factor) improved overall by 1.2 percentage points from the prior-year level to 78.2 percent.
Europe
In August 2013, a total of 934,100 passengers flew with Austrian Airlines in Europe. This comprises a rise of 2.3 percent compared to the previous year. The passenger load factor remained high at 83.3 percent.
In the period January to August 2013, Austrian Airlines carried about 6.4 million passengers in Europe, corresponding to a decline of 1.0 percent. In contrast, the passenger load factor during this period rose by 2.0 percentage points to 76.7 percent.
Intercontinental
In August 2013, the number of passengers carried on intercontinental flights operated by Austrian Airlines declined by 0.5 percent from the previous year. On balance, a total of 167,300 passengers were carried by Austrian Airlines on its intercontinental flights in the month of August 2013. The passenger load factor was up by 1.5 percent points to 89.0 percent.
In the period January to August 2013, Austrian Airlines carried a total of 1.1 million passengers on its intercontinental flights, a drop of 7.0 percent from the prior year. The passenger load factor climbed 0.5 percentage points to 79.8 percent.
